SANKOFA (sang – ko – fah ) symbol explained in the Akan language of Ghana to mean “reach back and get it”
SANKOFA is visually and symbolically expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. The West African symbol teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, reach into the deepest depths of ourselves and perpetuate our most prized attributes and values to be shared with the world and to help us progress onward.
It’s no new concept that in order to love another, one must first love oneself. SANKOFA represents that ideal. With its West African origins and concept of self-preservation for the sake of shared preservation, we felt as though SANKOFA represented the very essence of what February is all about. Reflection. Future. Love.
We reflect in the month of February in honor of Black History Month.
SANKOFA has deep roots in North American History. In 1991, during an excavation in Lower Manhattan, a cemetery for free and enslaved Africans was discovered. More than 400 remains were identified, but one coffin stood out. Nailed into its wooden lid were iron tacks, 51 of which formed the heart-shaped design of a SANKOFA. In the month of February, we pay homage to the crimes of our nation’s past so that we may reclaim our future.
This challenge is dedicated to overall wellness for the sake of self-love. The kind of love that prepares us for what we all desire and deserve in life — the love from another.
